Our mission: “To provide a rigorous industry-oriented education to inner-city youth of Minneapolis and St. Paul to prepare them for admission to and successful degree completion from an accredited technical or other college.” We take this charge very seriously, and everyday we work toward helping all of our students realize the opportunities they have, and that they must be prepared to take advantage of them.
A major opportunity as an institution we’ve taken advantage of is moving in to North High School during the summer of 2009. North has been an icon in the North Minneapolis community for nearly a century, and now with Dunwoody Academy partnering with Minneapolis Public Schools and North High, we hope to be a part of the next 100 prosperous years in North Minneapolis. This historic partnership is the result of a lot of hard work from everyone involved, including the unwavering support of Dunwoody College of Technology, Dunwoody Academy’s Authorizer.
This endeavor has encountered its share of criticism, but now more than halfway through the 2009-2010 school year we couldn’t be happier. The facility is phenomenal, providing us with fantastic lab spaces. North High and Dunwoody Academy’s administrative teams are working together seamlessly. And last, but definitely not least, the students from both schools are clearly focused on what’s important – their education! We are not claiming to be some sort of utopia, but our kids deserve recognition and support for truly being the number one reason this partnership is not only working, but flourishing. We expect only continued success as Dunwoody Academy begins its fourth year in operation to start the 2010-2011 school year.
Along with an enhanced standards-based curriculum, Dunwoody Academy provides career-focused training in five industries – Automotive, Construction, Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Media Arts. These industries are constantly searching for skilled applicants to fill positions right here in the Twin Cities area! Simply stated, a degree from Dunwoody Academy means your student can graduate from high school prepared to complete a degree from Dunwoody College of Technology, pursue a university education as well as immediately compete for entry level positions, with tremendous growth potential, in a variety of fields.
Here at Dunwoody Academy students are part of a vibrant, progressive environment. And because Dunwoody Academy strives to teach the whole person, we also offer instruction in 21st century skills like working in teams, effective communication, leadership and technology literacy. When it’s all said and done, we are a family and we are not simply educating our students to just be successful in the classroom, but to also ultimately have a successful life.
